TaylorMade is generally perceived as a driver company. However, their Milled Grind Wedges stay persistent as one of their most successful clubs for the last few years.

TaylorMase began to introduce their Milled Grind Wedge in the year 2017. And for the MG3 SB, engineers make sure that they retain the Raw Face and Milled Sole technology, plus adding Micro Ribs to the wedge’s face for a better short game experience.

In 2021, the Milled Grind Wedge 3 SB is one of the best looking and high performing wedges available in the market. It has that sharp and sophisticated look, alongside great feel and elite spin.

Technology Used

The ZTP-17 Grooves technology shows sharper edge radius and steeper walls to provide more bite on the golf ball and to maximize the spin. The Raised Micro Ribs are placed between the grooves to provide greater spin and more abrasive surface.

Although you may have heard of groove talk tsch before, the Raised Micro Ribs is a unique feature of the TaylorMade MG3 SB Wedge is built to create a more abrasive face that is intended for shorter shots.

Now moving to the namesake feature of the Milled Grind 3 SB Wedge is the Milled Grind technology. It is carefully milled to provide the topmost consistency from one club to another. And the use of it is to generate better and higher tolerance levels than any human being can achieve.

The remarkably crafted grind for each wedge is built to supply exceptional turf interaction to allow players to chip and pitch shots in a consistent manner.

Like the previous MG2 Wedge, the MG3 is also equipped with the Raw Face that is built to rust overtime. When being exposed to moisture, this technology enhances friction of the ball when in impact. And TaylorMade stated that the Milled Grind Wedge 3 is their most consistent and highest spinning wedge ever.

The Milled Grind Wedge 3 also has a Thick-Thin design, wherein it shows a thinner topline technology to look down upon. The additional weight is placed towards the wedge’s head to assist in controlling the ball flight, while producing low spinners that golfers would love to watch.

For the best part, the TaylorMade MG3 SB Wedge’s back part is very stunning. There are no sharp edges like the usual ones, but only sophistication and sleekness. And it gets wider and m9ore visible as your eyes glaze from the toe to the heel.

The head is quite more narrow around the hosel and it looks contrasting to the Ping Glide Wedge that appears to be in a shape of bubble-like. However, it feels quite heavy for some golfers, especially in terms of long shots. But even so, it is beautifully crafted all the way through.

The branding is placed aesthetically, with the “T” icon laid down on the sole. The “MG3” logo, on the other hand, is positioned near the heel. Unlike the Milled Grind Wedge 2, the MG3 SB looks busier, but in a good way.

Upon the address, this wedge has a moderately compact teardrop shape, combined with a reasonably straight leading edge. The Raw Face may rust over time, but it will still produce a contrast look to the heel and toe.

The Milled Grind 3 SB Wedge comes in two finishes: the Matte Black and Chrome. The Black Finish comes in every bounce and loft, except for the 46 degrees.

The Satin Chrome finish has been presented in the new MG3 Wedge as much likely as the P790 Irons. If you’re already a TaylorMade golfer, this wedge will fit beautifully in your golf bag

On the other hand, the Satin Black Finish looks more sophisticated and sleek.  Whichever of the two you choose, both will decrease the amount of glare you may experience if you’re playing in the course.

The profile of this wedge is very customary. But even so, it has a better look than the MG2 version. The Milled Grind Wedge 2 already looks and feels amazing, but the MG3 is made even better due to its premium finish and shaping. And if you look closer, the micro ribs are very visible as you remove the face-protecting sticker.

The TaylorMade MG3 SB Wedge has a lot to talk about in terms of performance. But let’s first start with the spin.

This wedge supplies consistent and high spinning capability in all kinds of shots. So it unquestionably belongs in the lists of elite class wedges that produce a great amount of spin. All thanks to the outstanding technologies equipped in this club, such as the Raided Micro Ribs, Raw Face Technology, and the ZTP-17 Grooves.

The new Milled Grind 3 SB Wedge offers a wide, yet manageable range of sole options — the Low Bounce (8 degrees) is available for 56, 58, and 60 degrees.

The Standard Bounce (46 to 60 degrees) is offered in 9 to 12 bounce degrees.

And the High Bounce (12 to 14 degrees) comes at 52 to 60 degrees.

Although there are different sole options, the difference between the LB, SB, and HB when it comes to measured bounce is not that huge. Yet, the trailing edge relief and the strong heel & toe is what stands out the most on the LB model.

All things considered, all bounce options are high-performing and very versatile. The Low Bounce is the easiest and softest to hit that works great for open-faced pitch shots.

Another impactful feature of the MG3 SB Wedge is the discrete Thick-Thin design. This is how it is named because of the way the back of the blade blends and varies to the thickness in order to spot the centre of gravity.

Although the CG of this wedge is not that sexy-looking as the groove technology, it has that impressive launch angle and great impact spin. The MG3 SB Wedge has a versatile centre of gravity that encourages high pitch launching and fighting the ball flight.

Lastly, when you hit the ball off the face, expect that the ball won’t grab as much as other golfers anticipate. You also won’t feel it running up too much on the face because of all the friction being generated from the technology.

Feel & Sound

The combination of the Raw Face and the 8620 carbon steel provides a pleasing feel upon impact.

At the center, the Milled Grind Wedge 3 has a soft feel, yet very solid. It’s like a gentle and strong hand that is picking the ball up and sending it in the direction it is aimed to go.

The feel is also accompanied by a very quiet sound upon impact. Pure shots are not like the usual ‘thud’ sound, but more of like a ‘click’.

One of the greatest things about hitting the MG3  SB Wedge is the precision it provides from the feedback. With every small move that you make that is away from the club’s center, will produce only a less satisfying feel. The smooth gradation it supplies allows golfers to appreciate the almost perfect shot.

Price Point

Even though TaylorMade MG3 Wedge is the latest edition of Milled Grind Wedges, the price is not that far from the MG2.
