Golfers have always had to compromise either distance or forgiveness when purchasing game enhancement irons. Both of these benefits are now available in the new Cobra F9 Speedback One Length irons thanks to "Speedback" Technology, a concept that employs novel shaping features in a way that is distinct from a standard game-improvement iron.

Cobra's new One Length irons are based on Bryson Dechambeau's groundbreaking approach to the golf swing. With a One Length setup, you can maintain the same setup and swing throughout the whole set for more precision and consistency. As the name implies, a One Length set is designed to have the same length and weight as a standard 7-iron, which simplifies your game by eliminating unnecessary variables.

With that, Cobra Golf has cause to be optimistic about 2019 beyond the addition of tour pros like Rickie, Bryson, and Lexi to their team. According to Matt S., "the Cobra Forged MB CB irons are a dream set," but in this review, I'll be taking a look at the new Cobra F9 SPEEDBACK One Length irons, which include a number of innovations aimed at making golf more pleasurable for the average player.

Technology Used

Where do I start? Well, these irons have attempted to combine a lot of technology, and I believe most of Cobra's effort in this area has been spent making the iron look more appealing while housing all of this game-improving technology.

Low CG Speedback Sole

Speedback One Length irons are shaped by wrapping a belt of steel across the back of the club, similar to how a wide body kit improves a racecar's stability. This results in a lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), which increases ball speed, launch angle, and carry distance without sacrificing sole width.

Forged E9 PowerShell Face

Off-center hits will go farther because to the larger Sweet Zone afforded by the E9's variable thickness face design (1.8mm at its thinnest). Forged PowerShell design include an undercut sole and an internal Speed Channel measuring 1.2mm in diameter, which return more energy to the ball and hence increase launch height and ball speed.

Co Molded Medallion

Metal (aluminum), thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), and acrylic foam are the three components that make up the medallion. Thanks to the use of lightweight materials that dampen vibrations, the experience you’ll get is softer and more responsive than ever before.

CNC Milled Face & Grooves

Precision CNC milling is often reserved for the production of player's irons that have been forge-welded. However, they incorporated this into these club. Resulting that every iron they produce will have a flawlessly flat face, and the lofts and grooves will all be precisely cut.

Looks

The designers at Cobra had no qualms about making substantial adjustments to the Cobra F8 irons that came before them. The most eye-catching feature of the design is the SPEEDBACK, which is a steel belt that wraps around the sole and increases the amount of mass in the heel and the ball of the foot. The breadth of a regular iron is represented by the chrome strip on the sole of the club, while the area with the matte finish indicates the wide-body design of the iron. By embracing the additional width, Cobra created a fascinating dynamic.

A great deal of effort was put in to providing the cavity of the Cobra F9 SPEEDBACK a new look that is more streamlined and aesthetically pleasing. There is not much of a difference in size between the topline and the offset. The chrome on the toe may be distracting in bright sunlight due to its brilliant shine, despite the fact that the face has fine mill lines that provide for an alluring batting surface.

Sound and Feel

The tone of the F9 Speedback is perfectly in tune with itself. Combining the familiar "tinkling" that you are used to hearing with the resonant "knock" that is so highly desired by tour professionals.

If you've hit it straight down the center, you'll be able to feel and see where it travels without having to keep an eye on it. The misses hurt more in the toe than the heel, but you can tell they're off-center hits no matter where they land.

Overall, when well-struck balls were hit with The Cobra F9 SPEEDBACK One Length irons, a crisp sound was created, and the clubs had a delicate, almost soft feel. Even when the hit was off-center, the three-piece hollow medallion made it seem sturdy and prevented it from being too abrasive on the hands.

Performance

Without adding more height to the lofts, how did Cobra make their longest iron ever? Technology. The forging of the PowerShell face returns more energy, and the SPEEDBACK shape helps get the ball airborne faster by lowering the center of gravity. That adds up to ball flights that are 5-10 yards further than my team is capable of.

Every golfer craves longer drives, but forgiving putters are their greatest buddy on the course. The PowerShell face is 1.8 mm thick at its thinnest point, and its variable thickness increases the SWEET ZONE, allowing for more distance on off-center hits. With this in mind, Cobra added 33 grams of tungsten to the toe and hosel of the 4 through 7 irons to increase MOI and provide the extra forgiveness most players require in the long irons. Poor contact with longer irons resulted in straight shots that lost just around 20 yards of distance when hit in the toe.

Cobra's progressive hosel lengths for CG setting (shorter on the 4-6 for lower CG and taller on the wedges for increased CG) are only one example of the innovative design improvements used to boost performance. The milled surface may have a variety of groove forms to regulate spin.

The U-shaped grooves on the 8-PW are intended to improve control and accuracy, while the V-shaped grooves on the 4-PW minimize spin. With a tighter groove spacing, the GW and SW can generate more spin.

Final Thoughts about Cobra F9 Speedback One Length Irons

When I was looking at the Cobra website, I spotted a slogan that perfectly described my impression of the Cobra F9 SPEEDBACK One Length irons: "Powerful, Stable, and Accurate." Irons are a good option for mid and high handicap players who want to improve their experience with the game because to the technological improvements made to practically every part of the club from grip to toe. Given how impressed I was with the additional distance and repeatability in finding the fairway, I wouldn't be shocked to see a Cobra F9 SPEEDBACK 4 iron in your bag in the near future.
