You may now consider your wait for Callaway to release the MD6 wedge to be over. There is a new flagship product at Callaway, and it's called the JAWS Raw. family of wedges that is the norm, or mainstream, or whatever you choose to call it. Given that Mack Daddy has reportedly reached the end of its useful life, the MD5 has been replaced by the Callaway Jaws Raw Wedge.

The company's split with Phil Mickelson, from whom the Mack Daddy moniker derives, is a coincidence, but it's worth noting. While the two may or may not be connected, for Callaway, starting again with JAWS Raw is like a fresh page.

Now that we have everything out of the way, we can get down to business.

Callaway Jaws Raw Wedge Review

Technology Used

The newest member of the Jaws family has Callaway's deepest grooves yet found on a wedge. This is significant since the latest Raw finish on the club face aids spin production.

In order to increase spin on half and three quarter shots, the razor-sharp grooves' wall angle is 37 degrees. Additionally, offset groove-in-groove technology has been included into the grooves. Spin on chip and lob shots is increased by 20 degrees with the help of micro-milled grooves.

Tungsten technology has also been used into the wedges. The goal here is to have a more even distribution of weight across the wedges, which should improve their feel and control. The tungsten weightings in each loft adjust the device's center of gravity for better handling. The center of gravity (CG) and trajectory may be adjusted, and the ball's flight path can be modified, all while benefiting from the added forgiveness afforded by clubs with adjustable hosel lengths.

SEVENTEEN varying degrees of loft and bounce are offered. One of them is the latest Z grind. To put it another way, this low-bounce alternative is more forgiving. The sharp chamfer at the leading edge aids in blending with the grass. Since the club may now skim slightly above the ground, digging is also reduced.

To further personalize your wedges, Callaway Customs offers an array of options. There are medallions, emojis, and a number of stamping possibilities available, along with a rainbow of color choices (13 total). Ideal if you're looking for a one-of-a-kind item!

Looks

The form is conventional, with a little offset, a tight face, and a rounded tip. You could get the impression that the lob wedge provides more room to move about in, but in reality, it's still not that big. The club's rear boasts a sleek, contemporary design, including two colors of weight ports and contrasting materials.

Being "raw" means that it will rust and become genuinely different with time, although the face milling does offer a touch of individuality to the appearance. In this case, just the clubface will rust, so don't worry! Besides, we cover everything else. In the long run, I imagine this will end up looking rather stylish.

The Jaws Raw may now be purchased in a Black Plasma finish in addition to the standard Chrome. I love that it completely gets rid of glare, and it looks great. If you'd want to add some flair, Callaway Customs also does custom paintfills.

Sound and Feel

The sensation of a flushed pitch or a neatly clipped chip might well be described in a variety of ways. One could use words like "sweet," "soft," "clippy," "nippy," or "zippy" to describe it. This is why the Jaws Raw wedge is perfect for you. The quality of the music and the whole experience are superb.

A premium ball shot properly around the greens makes a short 'tock,' while a full swing from the fairway makes a little higher-pitched 'tick. Indeed, both options are quite desirable. This club has the feel of a Tour model and provides noticeable feedback to the player on off-center shots.

Performance

When it comes to wedge performance, I care most about two things: (a) being able to reliably manage distance and reduce shot trajectory on full swings, and (b) having a wonderful sound and feel on shorter shots. In both respects, Jaws Raw exceeds expectations.

Jaws Raw excels in providing reliable distance control. Chips run out a consistent distance, halt, and check with a low open-faced spinner, and it stops swiftly on full swings. The microgrooves of the Jaws Raw are set at a 20 degree angle, a minor modification to the device's Groove-in-Groove technology. Based from what we've heard from Callaway, this improves spin on low-velocity strokes like chips, throws, and lobs.

The stock shaft deserves a mention here since I believe it plays a crucial part in adjusting the flight path. With the Jaws Raw, Callaway has opted for the Dynamic Gold Spinner 115 as the standard shaft. When paired with the Cleveland RTX Zipcore, (review HERE), I had excellent results. But I played another well regarded wedge lately and found that the stock shaft made my shots bubble in the air and get gobbled away by the wind. This should be common knowledge by now, but I'll mention it anyway: the shaft is important.

There are 17 possible permutations of loft and bounce, as well as four distinct grinds, for the Jaws Raw. I believe many golfers will appreciate the Z Grind's inclusion to the lineup. Both 58 and 60 degrees are the maximum offered on the Z Grind. With an open face, I was able to hit a wider range of strokes because to the tri-level sole and low bounce.

FAQs

Q. What are the specs for the Callaway JAWS Raw wedges?

The wedges can be ordered in four distinct grinds and a wide range of lofts and bounces.

You can get a Z Grind with 8 degrees of bounce in 58 and 60 degrees, a S Grind with 10 degrees of bounce in 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58 and 60 degrees, an X Grind with 12 degrees of bounce in 58 and 60 degrees, and a W Grind with 12 degrees of bounce in 50, 52, 54, 56, 58 and 60 degrees.

Q. The Callaway JAWS Raw wedges include what color features?

There are two different colors you can get the Callaway JAWS Raw wedge in: chrome and raw black plasma. The latter has a finish that will wear off over time because it was treated with a QPQ (quench, polish, quench) process. Even so, it is expected to outlast PVD in the long run.

Q. What are the benefits of purchasing Callaway jaws wedges?

The softer, more rounded profile that these wedges give you behind the ball is a nice bonus. Callaway's most aggressive grooves to date can be seen on their newest Jaws wedge. With the new Raw finish on the club face, this is all part of the plan to generate the most spin possible.

Q. How aggressive are the grooves in the deepest Callaway wedge?

The newest Jaws wedge has Callaway's deepest grooves ever seen in a wedge. This is significant since the new Raw finish on the club face aids spin production. The 37° wall angle of the razor-sharp grooves is made to increase spin on half and three quarter shots.

Final Thoughts about Callaway Jaws Raw Wedge

One of Callaway's best-performing clubs, the JAWS wedges are suitable for a wide range of golfers thanks to its versatility and the Raw Face.

To improve your short game and pin-hunting abilities, this JAWS model features a raw face like those introduced by TaylorMade and other brands.

Some may be put off by the fact that they rust with time, but that is also one of the clubs' advantages. The more worn and shabby they look, the more power you'll be able to wring out of them.

The Callaway Jaws Raw is a brilliant wedge created by a genius in the field. Detailed attention to detail has resulted in a noticeable improvement in every facet, and it shows on the green. This is a look that guarantees success. When you smash your ball down the fairway, it feels great and makes a satisfying sound. The Callaway Jaws Raw should be among your top choices when shopping for new wedges.

Alternatives to Consider

xE1 Wedge

The "Auto-Glide Sole," which can be traced back to the Ray Cook Alien wedge and, more recently, the Cleveland Smart Sole wedges, is the engine that drives the performance of the XE1 wedge. In spite of its odd appearance, nobody can deny how wonderfully it performs. Once you leave the underground bunkers, the XE1 is fully autonomous.

MAZEL Golf Sand Wedge

A stunning electroplated rose hue and high polish finish make this surface corrosion resistant for longer use, even when playing on damp grass. Designed and manufactured where some of the best clubs on the market today are produced. For golfers of all skill levels who have trouble getting the ball airborne, high-lofted wedges are available. These clubs are ideal for short approach shots, strokes played from the sand, chip shots, and any other shot that requires lifting the ball high enough to clear the lip and come to a quick stop on the green.
